International Festival Art

Ok, first I need to apologize for the bad photos. My flash washed them out. sorry.
The second grade have been working on art that will be on display at a festival in Hingham.
The project was to draw a flag of the country that is part of their heritage. They used oil pastels for that. Then after covering it with black paint they scratched it off to give it a texture.
On top of each flag is a drawing of themselves saying the country of the flag.
The festival is Saturday May 3rd at the Hingham Shipyard. Here is a link to more info.

Shiny Fish

Here are some playful fish by the 3rd grade class. We used colored tissue paper, tin foil and packing paper to make these. The students worked on symmetry, color mixing, and cutting skills.

Milk Carton Contest update

SpongeBob is starting to come together!
So far we've used 247 cartons.

Drawing from Billy

Thanks to Billy in 3rd grade for sharing this amazing drawing.
You have a great style to your cartoon drawing.
Keep up the work!

Origami Cranes

This is a long time coming. We've been collecting cranes from any student who has free time after getting their project done early. I had the paper and instruction set aside for them to use. The 7th grade class can tell you that it's harder than you think to make them. It took them two classes with a video and paper instruction to make one. I felt we had enough to display in the front window of the school. It looks good from the inside or outside.

Warhol Cats

I wish I had done this project sooner. The cats came out so cool! Each one has it's own personality. I just love it. The 4th grade class followed me on the board do a simple pencil drawing of the cat shape. Then using a black sharpie they had to go over the line but break up the strokes to give the appearance of fur. Then add more fur detail all over. Last the color was achieved with water color paint. The inspiration for this is by Andy Warhol's cat painting.

Birthday Birds

Each year the 8th grade make clay birds for the K2 class. When a student from K2 has a birthday they get a bird to take home. We tried something different this year. We used air dry terra cotta clay and painted with acrylic paint. I'm looking forward to handing them out to next year's K2 class. Thanks to the 8th gr. class for making the great birds for them.

Matisse

This is one of a two part lesson on Matisse in 6th grade. The first part is still in progress. I'll post that next week. Here we have the other part, a large banner piece in the style of Matisse's drawing with scissors. I had many samples of his work on the projection screen for inspiration. Then the students used just scissors without any drawing. This is the kind of project that any age can enjoy.

Tessellations

The 5th grade will be exploring tessellations in math soon so we got a head start in art class. Each student got a rhombus made up of two triangles. Then they folded the rhombus and drew half of a creature face on each edge. Then flip it over and trace the other half on the other side. 12 copies are made then constructed together to made the shape above. Each face has to match up. After gluing down the pieced the students colored with markers making sure all the similar faces are the same color. To see more tessellations check out the work of M.C. Escher.

Art Club (animation)

We have started the second session of the animation art club. The students have been working on storyboards for the movies they will be making next week. Here are a few.

Art from William

So cool.

Made by Milk

Just an update on the 7th grade. I don't have much to show for artwork from them because they have been busy working on the Made by Milk contest. The class has to collect over 100 milk cartons from the cafeteria and build a sculpture of a character. Only 20 percent can be other materials. We are going with Sponge Bob from the episode "Imagination". I'll keep you posted on the progress. So far they have collected 198 cartons!

Aztec Warriors

I love the way these came out. The 6th grade really excelled with this one.
We started with a basic drawing of a warriors profile with a plain hooded outfit.
Each student referred to a handout with symbols and descriptions of  particular warriors (wind, lizard, eagle, etc..). Then they were asked to pick one to design their warrior drawing. They used colored markers for the design.

The Great Wave (almost done)

The 8th grade have been working hard on this latest project. Basically I took the image of The Great Wave by Hokusai and pixelated it. Each student got a section of the image to duplicate the color of each pixel using paint. As each section gets added the image of the wave starts to appear. It's just another way to take something and interpret in a new way to make an interesting piece of art.
We have a few more squares to add then I'll mount in on a board so it can be displayed.

Thank You Natalie!

I just have to send out a big thanks to Natalie for bringing in this thoughtful gift for the art room.
We always need more erasers. I love the colors.

Art Club, Animation

This is a sneak peak at some of the work being made by the art club students.
I'll post everything when the classes are over.
This is by Mikayla.

Miro

This is a painting by the great master Joan Miro.
The first grade viewed some of his work then played a little game I have called "roll a Miro".
Basically what you do is roll a die and what number you get tells you what Miro style shape you draw until it's all put together into one crazy scene. We used black markers for that part. Then some of the shapes made were filled in with primary colors. Last we placed wet pieced of color tissue paper on top of the drawing. When you lift the tissue off it leaves behind an interesting pattern of color.

Looks like a Miro to me!

Willow Pattern

You may have seen this design on a plate at some time, maybe your Grandma house. This is called a Willow Pattern. It's based on an old story, here is a link to it.
The 5th grade class read the story then made there own interpretation using only tones of blue paint.

K2 Apples

We worked on painting to show light and shadow. I'm always impressed with how well the K2 class can handle this concept at an early age. This lesson was done by the students following along with me on the board. I had a paper taped on the chalkboard and we all had red, white and blue paint. First starting with middle tones, then light, last dark.

Not much to say...

I don't have a lot to post at this time. Most of the classes are in mid lesson. The drying rack is full and ready to wrap up the projects next week. Check back to see what everyone is making.

Art Class Rocks

THANKS JACK!!!

Foil Embossing Owls

The sixth grade drew owls from reference then traced the lines with glue. When the glue dried foil was covered over it. A cotton swab was used to rub around the raised image to give the look of tooled metal. More detail was added with a dull pencil.

Playing with Airdry Clay

Free Time Art

Annelise had some free time in class and did some quick doodles.
