Big Black Cat

I love this project. 3rd and 4th grade followed along with me drawing the extra big kitty face. Then the lines and some color was added using oil pastels. Last a wash of black watercolor paint went over the whole paper leaving the oil pastel showing through.

Tree of Life

This was the last painting Art Club. Last year I had the students make a large version of "The Scream" painting. This time we did a mash up of two paintings by Klimt and Kandinsky.
It really is quite big and is now hanging up in the front hallway for everyone to see.

Sneakers

I've done this lesson every year and each time I'm impressed with how well the students handle it. The 7th grade can be hard on them selves sometimes about their drawing abilities. I think by looking at the skill in the drawings of their sneakers you can see differently. Each student had to look at the sneakers they were wearing and draw in pencil a side view. The go over the drawing with a thin sharpies with contour line.
For the background we did something a little different. The student used the sole of their shoe for inspiration to make a pattern they would then make a print of using foam trays and red paint.

I hope the kids know that this high school level work they doing, and doing well.

Ripped Paper Mosic

If anyone knows me they know that I use a lot of repurposed materials. I've saved all the scraps
of construction paper used over the years. We don't really use that much construction paper, but it adds up. Here the 1st grade have turned the leftover paper into lovely pumpkin mosaics. First they traced a plate for the circle shape. Then they filled the shape with just orange by gluing each piece. This takes great patients. This can be a challenge to your average first grader. This group handled it with a great finished piece of art just in time for Halloween.

Centerpieces

This was a service project for the 8th grade. These are the centerpieces for the lunch after Mass.
The fall leaves where made with sculpted wire and tissue paper. On the outside of the container are butterflies painted in watercolor.

Theibaud Cakes

The cakes by the 6th grade were done in chalk pastels in the style of  Wayne Thiebaud.
First the cakes were drawn in perspective with pencil, than color was added. Finally the shadow and highlights were added and blended with the students finger.

Art Club (painting)

The art club worked on painting still life.
The goal was to learn how to use light, middle and dark tones to give dimension.
It can be a challenge working with tempera paint, but they handled it just fine.

The Great Food Truck Challenge

The other day I was in Boston having something to eat from a food truck. The design on the truck was striking and got me thinking it would be fun to design one some day. Then I thought, I bet the students would like to also.
So the Great Food Truck Challenge began.
The 7th grade competing against the 8th grade.
Here is a sample of the designs.
The students created the name, look and menu for each truck.
Thanks to Mrs. Stanley in computer for helping with this assignment too.
The ballots are still coming in, but I think we'll have the winners in by next week.
I'll have the winning grade and a first, second and third place individual.
Good Luck!

Art Club

Jumping right into Art Club. We started with watercolors. The students worked on "wet on wet" techniques of painting. Glad to see all the new 4th grade faces in the club. Next week will be color mixing.

Castles with Surprises

This was a fun little project with the 4th graders. While watching me draw a simple castle building the students followed along. Then they were encouraged to add their own touches and details. The doors and windows open to surprises. Skills we worked on were drawing a brick pattern, creativity and following direction.

Pastel Peacocks

The 3rd grade worked hard on these beautiful peacock drawings. They followed me step by step to draw the shapes then they chose the colors from the oil pastels. Once done they added dimension with a little highlight on the bird's body. I think the students were happy with what they did. They begged to bring them home, but I need to keep them for the Art Fair. So as a compromise I've put them here to view.
