Art Room

I love the Art Room. I am very lucky.

Nick Cave

I think one more class and the 2nd grade will be done with their Nick Cave figures.

Roman Columns

To continue with the study of Rome the 6th grade class moved from mosaics to architecture. We look at just columns which was very important in Roman architecture and can still be seen everywhere. The have three major styles of columns, Corinthian, Ionic and Doric. The students got to choose the style they would reproduce from reference supplied. They started with pencil then added color and shading with brown color pencil.

Paul Klee

This is Paul Klee. The 1st grade class and I looked at some of his work from the impressionism period. I think they enjoyed the colors he uses and the playful nature of the work. One of his pieces we used as inspiration for a drawing of fish. For this the students used oil and chalk pastels on black paper. Lots of skills came into play. Patterns, drawing fish, cutting and glueing were used.

Masks

William in 4th grade did a great job with his African inspired mask. After looking at some reference the students used plates, cardboard, paper and paint to create a variety of interesting mask. We kept the color palette in black, red, brown and white.

Stop Motion Art Club Class

The Stop motion Art Club class was a great time. The students experimented with all types of animation styles like clay, chalk, objects and paper. Visit our video channel to view some the students work. https://vimeo.com/artclubshs

Mexican Folk Art Suns

The 3rd grade class learned about the Metapac region of Mexico. This region is know for the beautiful clay folk art suns. The students used the colors and expressions typically used in the original art from Mexico. I think we can all agree we needed some more sun after this crazy winter!

Beetles

The 4th grade class did a study of beetles. I had a variety of pictures of beetles for reference for them to choose from. The first study was done with an old style fountain pen and ink. The class took to it quickly. This was the positive drawing. The negative study was done with a scratch board and a scratching tool. They look good on the hallway outside the art room.

Art for the Catholic Schools Office

Abigail Heffernan and Emily Henderson had art chosen to be displayed at the Catholic Schools Office. Nice job girls!

The Starry Night

The K2 class learned about Vincent Van Gogh's painting "The Starry Night". We talked about the movement the paint strokes show in this work and how it looks like wind. They created their own pieces showing movement using markers, crayons and watercolor paint. We also explored silhouettes by making shapes of trees and houses for the foreground of the art.

Finished Wheel Barrel

It's all painted and full of garden goodies. The 4th grade did a great job painting the roses. Some lucky auction winner will take this home tomorrow. Thanks to the Johnson Family for the donations!

Nick Cave

2nd grade is hard at work at a project. I'll show more when they are done.
They learned about american artist Nick Cave.

Roman Mosaics

After a discussion about mosaics from Rome Italy and viewing examples the 6th grade class made their own. However we didn't use ceramic or glass tiles like the romans. We used various dried beans.

Each student used a recycled CD case as the frame. A paper with guide lines was placed under the case to help with keeping the design in a proper radial pattern. Each bean was glued with white glue until it was filled in. I can't wait to display them all together.

Birthday Birds

The clay birthday birds are coming out quite nice. The 8th grade is showing some great creativity in the painting. The K2 class will have a hard time picking out a favorite on their birthday.
The clay is air drying terra cotta clay. It doesn't take long for the birds to dry. Then the paint used is acrylic. I will add a sealant before they will be ready to go home with someone.

Dragons

First grade class got right to work on the colorful dragon heads. We started by following my step by step lesson on drawing the face in pencil. Then the students traced over the lines with black marker. They then got to add color with oil pastels. The art is now brightening up the art shack.
