Happy New Year!

Art by 1st grade

Have a safe and fun Christmas and New Year. See you in 2014!

Hedgehogs

The K2 class worked some more on cutting skills. First we looked at adorable pictures of hedgehogs. Then using paper plates the students cut out the body shape. Then they added the signature quills to the back of their hedgehog. The texture then was drawn with crayons and a cute face was added. The finishing touch of brown was done with watercolors.

Pablo Picasso Faces

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso was the focus of the lesson for the 2nd graders. We looked at all the different styles that Picasso worked in then made our own version of his cubism style face. We did a quick drawing lesson on how to draw eyes from two angles then drew the nose at a 3/4 view. The students handled it quite well. I think some adults don't know how to draw an eye from a side view. The face parts then were placed on a "face".

Auction Item Preview, 2nd grade Tree

This painting on canvas by the 2nd grade was done using their finger prints for leafs and each students made a unique bird. It's going to be open for bids at the Gala.

Polar Bears

1st grade used small round sponges to make these lovable polar bears.
They are on display in the 3rd floor hallway.

Tape Resist Trees

Every year I do a tape resist lesson, but I try to do a variation of it. Here the 3rd grade made birch trees with a red headed woodpecker on one. Some of the skills we worked on was foreground and background, painting with watercolors and salt, shading and drawing lesson.

Snowman Lost his Hat

2nd grade used small round sponges to make these playful snowmen. The hat was cut out of black paper and placed up in the air like it was blown off. Then while the paint was drying the students drew an illustration of what happen to the hat when it blew away.

Creative Problem Solving

I have five tables in the art room. So each table got a collection of found objects placed in the middle for the group to view. They were forbidden to touch or pick up the objects. The instructions were to use all the objects to make directions to construct an interesting structure. It could look like something familiar or be abstract, but all the pieces had to be used. Also it had to really be able to be made with a hot glue gun by a 7th grader. The ones above are the winners of each table that were voted by a different table.
Next the 7th graders will have to make them using the directions from the 4th grade. I'll post the final products when they are done.

Cartouches

The 7th grade class have been studying Egypt in class so we fit in some lessons to go with it. Each student got a small piece of clay that is soft until it's baked. The lesson was to shape it to a form that would fit their name in hieroglyphics. The symbols were engraved using a toothpick. Then after they were baked to be hard the student painted them with black acrylic paint then gold paint on top. The final product resembles an antique pharaohs cartouche.

K2 Cutting skills

I had rolls of adding machine paper donated to the class room. I finally found a project to use it. The K2 class students each get a few strips of the paper and some scissors. Then with cutting skills make a fringe cut along one side of the paper. When we have enough to cover a tree shape I glued the strips overlapping them to give the tree it's pine needle texture. We even had time to fit in a quick star drawing lesson for the decorations. After Christmas check in to see what I make out of the fringe tree..

More Clay

The first grade class had fun with the clay too..
