Elephant Festival

The 3rd grade learned about the Elephant Festival that happens in March. Each student got cardboard and clothespins that they painted the week before. Then the following week with reference pictures of the decorated elephants in India they used markers to make their own.

Keith Haring Figures

These moving and grooving figures are by 2nd grade. They had to cut out each figure (body, head and limbs) and put each one in an interesting position. Then after tracing each one color with marker in the the style of American artist Keith Haring.

Lots of Chicks and Eggs

K2 had a lesson on foreground, middle ground and background.
They got it right away.
Then we drew rows of chicks and eggs using a pattern.
We have a lot of smart eggs in K2.

Zootopia

The hot movie right now is Zootopia. So to fill a little time in 3rd and 4th grade class I did a quick step by step lesson on how to draw Nick Wilde and Lt. Judy Hopps.

Easter Eggs

K2 used many techniques to make these cool easter eggs. First they traced an egg shape on paper, then they placed stickers around the traced egg. Next the patterns were drawn with crayons. On top of that watercolor paint was used for added color then the stickers were removed. Lastly the grass was made by painting tempera paint with a plastic fork.

Food Truck Challenge

The 7th and 8th grade Food Truck Challenge has started.
I will post the winners next week.

Fuller Craft Museum Field Trip

The 5th & 8th grade class took some time out of the day to visit the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton. The current exhibits is Toothpick World and Paper and Blade: Modern Paper Cutting. One highlight was the "to scale" version of Fenway park all made from toothpicks. I didn't do a good job taking pictures so I'm hoping to get some from the chaperones to post later.

Metamorphosis

The 7th grade class has been working on pencil drawings showing one object morphing into another. The key is to choose two objects that have a similar shape.

Some of the students are still finishing, so I will post more later.

German Cuckoo Clocks

About three weeks ago the 3rd grade class and I watched an episode of "How it's Made" showing us how cuckoo clocks are made. The factory was the famous Black Forest clocks in Germany, all made by hand. After that we got to work on our own clocks. The background shape was made from painted paper and textured paper that the students had woven. From there they cut it into a house shape and added the necessary details needed for a cuckoo clock. As an extra we also worked on roman numerals. Why not?

Envelope Art

I informed the 6th grade that there was a contest that I think they would do very well at. The Washington (DC) Calligraphers Guild and the National Association of Letter Carriers sponsors an envelope design contest every year with a different theme. The theme for 2016 is "Communication". The goal is to represent the theme using the address on the envelope that is mailed to the Washington office to be judged. Here is a picture I took of them before I brought them to the post office. The woman at the post office didn't mind the extra work she had to do to read the address because the art was so much fun to look at. Good luck to all the submissions!

Henri Rousseau

Henri Rousseau, painter

The 2nd grade class and I looked at paintings by Henri Rousseau
He had spent a lot of his time in his greenhouse. This were his love of nature came. As for the tigers he got inspiration from newspapers and books. The students followed my direction in painting the shapes and adding detail with tempera paint.

Roman Mosaics

6th grade made their own version of Roman mosaics using cardboard pieces that have been painted to  look like small stones.

Cat in The Hat

For Read Across America week K2 made Cat in The Hat mosaics.
