8th Grade Animation Started

The 8th grade class has been working on an animation project of a horse walking through various backdrops. Here is a small sample of what's been done so far. Look for the final to be posted soon.

Rainbow Lions

The class with the 2nd grade started with the story of the mouse and the lion. Then each student got a sheet of chip board and followed step by step on how to draw a lion face. The last step was the rainbow mane using a radial line stroke. Oil pastels were used.

K2 Stained Glass

I talked about the art of stained glass windows and mentioned the impressive window we have at our church. The students created their own windows with colored tissue paper glued to wax paper. Then they had to find the shapes and outline them with a black marker. They look great hanging up in the window in the art room.

Finished Creations by 4th and 7th grade

Ok, let me explain. This is the finished product of a collaboration project. First the forth grade class got into groups. Each group had a pile of found objects that they then had to invent a sculpture using all the pieces and they would be able to be constructed with a glue gun. The directions were drawn up by them and handed down to the 7th grade. The 7th grade then used a glue gun to build by using the directions. I was completely impressed with the results. I recommend this exercise for any class, it touches on many skills and it's fun too. All the materials I gave them were from a recycle center.

Art from Home

Thanks William for bringing in these cool drawings you did at home. Also thanks for inspiring me to do a class on dream catchers. We should have them done this week. Look for the post.

Symmetrical Bugs

The 4th grade class folded a piece of paper lengthwise and drew an interesting bug of some sort on half of the paper with a black oil pastel. Then fold the paper over and rub the back so the pastel transfers to the other side. This will give you a perfect symmetrical bug, just like in real life.

Realistic Eyes

I have just a few lessons that I like to repeat each year because I think they are really successful. Again the drawing a realistic eye lesson proves to be a winner. The 7th grade class handled in in ease.

Primer to Perspective

We are starting drawing in perspective in 5th grade this month.
Next we'll go the next level and try buildings.

Anti-Tobacco Art Poster Contest

The 1st and 2nd grade class had the option to enter a drawing into the MMA anti-tobacco art contest. The theme is "How tobacco is bad for your body". After a short discussion the student came up with their own creative way to show this message. The winners of each age group gets a prize and the art printed in a calendar. Good Luck!

Canopic Jars

The 7th grade class were studying Egypt so as a link they made canopic jars using gold paint on black paper. They got to choose either a cat or dog symbol with embellishment of Klimt style designs. Last they had to put the name of the long lost pet in hieroglyphs on the jar.

Racoons in Oil Pastel

The1st and 2nd graders had a raccoon drawing lesson. The critters were drawn with oil pastel on brown and blue construction paper. Cutting skills were need for cutting out the raccoon!

Swan Drawing

I always call this a swan but maybe it's a goose.
The 6th grade class followed basic step by step direction by me on the board. They started with simple shapes then added details. Final steps were shading, texture and blending. It was done with pencil on drawing paper.

Weaving

It's that time of year when I have a few classes try out weaving. The 4th grade do these mini-weavings. It has embroidery thread wrapped around a piece of cardboard then they add the yarn by weaving under and over using a small plastic needle. This year they got the project done in one 40 minute class. I was impressed.

The 3rd grade are also working on weaving dream catchers. Here they are waiting to have the yarn woven in for next class. The boarders of the circles are decorated with native American symbols. The students used oil pastels for that for a vibrant color.

Artist Portfolio

Cool art can be found in all places in the art room. Jack in the 1st grade made this really cool dragon on his portfolio.

Some of the Action Items

The Sacred Heart Gala is coming soon. Here is a sneak peak at some more items that will be available for bidding at the auction. The prints of world landmarks was created by the 6th grade class. They used recycled foam trays from the supermarket to engrave the image of a famous landmark then made a print with paint.

The second item shown is by the 4th grade. Each student drew a self portrait using markers and crayons. They are displayed on a stretched canvas with a decretive border ready for hanging.
