The 4th graders each got a leaf that there were to trace in interesting positions on a piece of watercolor paper. Next they where asked to make a negative image of the leaf by coloring the background black with oil pastel. Now for the color mixing each student got red, blue and yellow watercolor paint. As you can see it mixed nicely to make orange, blue and purple too.

Sneakers
The 7th graders just started working on the contour drawings of their sneakers this week, but I had to showoff the first sketch Katie made in under 30 minutes. Excellent job.
Cliffs
The 6th grade class has been working on spacial relationship of shapes and shading with this cliff drawing lesson.
Hot Air Ballons
This was a lesson for the 4th grade on foreground, middle ground and background. Each student made a hot air ballon from each position.
Monarch Butterfly
Yes I know it's now Fall and not exactly butterfly season. That doesn't mean the 2nd grade can't learn how to draw one using oil pastels. They followed my direction on the board and made there own choice of color for the background. They are brighting up the hallway right now.
Mixed Media Lions
Ok I had my doubts about this project when I started. I though it might be too much for the 1st graders. They completely proved me wrong. Piece of cake. First they each got a piece of chipboard. Next they followed my direction on the board on how to draw a lions head. After that they added color with oil pastel. Last but not least they knotted yarn through hole around the head for the mane. I love the way these came out.
Grid to Scale and Color Value
The 8th grade started this in June back when they were still 7th graders. There are a lot of steps. First each student got a greyscale posterized print of a dog half this size. First they made a drawing twice the size using the grid method onto watercolor paper. Next they picked a color to interpret the greyscale in the values of that color. So if you picked red you would use only black and white to make the dark and light values.

3D Cube Art
The 2nd grade transformed their 2D art to 3D. They drew designs using markers on a templet then cut, folded and built a cube.
Work from Home
Thanks Genevieve in 2nd grade for bringing in the artwork you made at home to share with the class. Your work is always so creative. Keep it up!

Paper Plate Dragons
I just knew that the 3rd graders would do well with this project, but they more than surpassed what I had expected. I asked a lot for them to do in 40 minutes. Cut the shapes from a paper plate, draw all the detail using a thin black sharpie and add color with water color paint. One more week and they will be ready to hang from the clouds in the class room.
Art from Home
Owen in 4th grade brought in these great drawings he did of Jurassic World characters. I love them! Keep up the great work at home. The personality really comes through in the people.
Circle Painting
This project has become a tradition for 7th grade. We start the year with a collaborative circle painting. The students only use circles, dots or lines. You start with one circle then take turns adding to it. Each painting comes out different. Next week they will add more detail.
Places to See Art
The students get info on shows in local museums posted in the classroom regularly. So hopeful a few will remember the next time their family is thinking of a place to visit on the weekend. We are lucky to have so many great museums in the area.
Stubby Pencils
In June I let the then 5th grade class go through the stubby pencils I saved from the past year. They were asked to use the pencil in some way in a drawing. Only black could be used. We don't want to waste anything in art class.
