Natalie in second grade was the big winner for Sacred Heart School. Her drawing was picked from 3500 entries to be one of twelve winners for the poster contest. Here is a link to the winning posters. The drawing will be part of a calendar for 2015. The ceremony took place at the State House with lunch and a tour of the State House. We are all so proud of Natalie for the great work she did and how she represented our school at the State House.

Horse Animation
The 8th grade made this animation a while back. They also did some great backgrounds to go with it. However the file was just too big to post. So I've just posted the horse without the background. It still is a fun animation. If you right click the image you can copy it to use as an animated gif.
All the hard work they did drawing the images paid off. I love it.
Alberto Giacometti
The 8th grade had time for one more project before their last day at SHS. Then it's off to HIGH SCHOOL! I hope they take art as an elective. I think they are all ready to do great things in 9th grade.
So for this project the students used pipe cleaners to build a "skeleton" of a figure. Then add thickness with foil and tape. Once the figure looks to be in the right proportions it's painted black. The finishing touch is a dry painting of gold to give it the appearance of metal as Alberto Giacometti's sculptures would look.
Art Fair 2014
We had a great turn out for the Art and Academic Fair. Thanks to all the family and friends that came out to see all the hard work the students have been putting into their artwork.

Good news (and bad news)
First the good news.....
Anastasia won first place for the Tufts library mural contest!
In June the drawing she did will be painted on to the wall behind Tuft's library in Weston Park. What's also great is that this is the same park our school has Field Day.
We had 30 submissions for the contest. I'm proud of all the hard (and quick) work everyone did to be part of this community contest. You show that you care about the image of the town and the places for kids to go and play outside. Sacred Heart School has the best art students!
All the students that sent a submission are invited to help with painting the mural. You will be contacted by email from the Weymouth Art Association in June.
As for the bad news....
we did not win any of the categories in the Made by Milk contest.
I think the 7th grade class did an outstanding job and should be proud. There will be another milk carton contest in the Fall so we'll have to check it out.
Here are the winners if you want to check them out:

Art Fair
Saturday I hung up the artwork for the Art Fair. It all looks excellent. I think we have even more pieces than last year. The students have worked hard and would love to show it off for you. Please come to the school Friday at 12:00 for the spring concert then head over to the classrooms for the academic and art fair.
Tufts Library Butterfly Collection
We had our annual trip to Tufts Library to draw from the collection of bugs and butterflies. This year the students would select a section from a poster to add an insect that would fit nicely. They used first pencil then Sharpie markers. The finial poster full of bugs will be on display at the art fair Friday.
Color Tint (in progress)
The 7th grade are in the progress of a color tint lesson. They are painting a cross section of a citrus fruit with the sections representing the dark and light tones of the color chosen. Next detail will be added with oil pastels.
New Student
First grade has a new student, Isabella. She has come all the way from England to join the Sacred Heart community. I'm happy to see her jump right into the art class. We had a lesson on drawing flowers with chalk pastels.
Audubon Birds
Here are few of the great examples of the work the 6th grade did with the John James Audubon lesson. The birds were drawn from reference then outlined with thin marker. Color was added with watercolor paints. The background is a print from plastic foliage and tempera paint. I love the way the variety of textures and colors work together.
Iris Flowers
The first part of this project had the students fold paper in half and add white, purple and yellow pain to the center of the fold. Then when the paper is folded in half and pressure is added the finished product is this cool iris looking blob. With Mother's day coming the 2nd grade cut out the blobs and added stems and detail for a nice flowery image. It's also a great lesson on symmetry.
Bubble Hydrangeas
This I think was one of the most fun projects for the K2 class. I felt that this class was mature enough to blow bubbles with the soapy colored water without any mishaps. They came through big time. Once the bubbles are a perfect height the student places a piece of paper on top of the bubbles, wait for the count of 20 then lift to find a cool print. Each student made three prints then cut them out and added leafs to make the hydrangeas flowers. Perfect for Mother's Day this weekend!
International Festival
The 2nd grade class made artwork representing their heritage for the International Festival in Hingham. They had music, food and vendors from different countries along with great art.

Forsythia
I think the kindergarteners did a great job painting from life with this forsythia lesson.
The branches were done first using a brush and keeping in mind the structure of branches and trees. The flowers and leaves were done with cotton swabs.
Watercolor Popsicles
First grade experimented with watercolor techniques the week before.
Oil pastel resist, tape resist, salt and wet on wet.
The finished samples then were transformed into popsicles.
