Thanks Emily

I love it when students bring in art from sketchbooks. Here is one from Emily.
Keep up the drawing during Summer vacation!

Drawings from Letters and Numbers

The 2nd grade worked on some great drawings following
instruction from videos by Harptoons
Each picture was prompted with either a letter or number.

Fun and Games

The Straw Manikin by Goya

The Philosopher's Lamp by Magritte

The first game the 6th grade did in class this week was "Finish the Picture". Each student got a paper with a section from a famous piece of art from history. They were asked to finish the scene not knowing what it came from. After ten minutes of drawing I showed them the original art.

The next game was "Synchronized Drawing". In pairs the students would fold the paper in half then one would lead the drawing while the other would follow. You get all sorts of interesting drawings with this one.

Art Contest Winner

Congratulations to Suzanne in 6th grade!

She was one of the winners chosen for the Graceful Envelope Contest. The theme was communication. The entries were asked to find a creative way to incorporated the address and stamp on the envelope and convey the theme. All the winners are on view at this link.

Ai WeiWei

This week for the 6th grade I viewed a short video describing the history and process behind the current temporary display of Ai Wei Wei's Zodiac Heads in Boston. You can see them outside, around the water fountain on the Rose Kennedy Greenway this summer. Ai Wei Wei is best know for his design of the "Bird's Nest" stadium for the Olympics in China.

For more info and the video I showed go to: zodiacheads.com

Working Moving Hand

Here is a little STEAM project I did with the 5th grade class.
First we looked at medical drawings of hands and how the ligaments work in the fingers.
Then using cardboard, straws, string, rubber bands and glue we made our own version of a working human hand. After some frustrating times trying to tie string to rubber bands and getting hot glue on our fingers the finished product was worth it.

Popsicles

The first grade is getting ready for the summer with some colorful popsicles.
First they got a piece of watercolor paper, then they divided it into four sections. I gave them some bright watercolor paints to work with and some crayons and a little corse salt. They experimented in each section with the colors and how they react to the salt and wax crayons.
The next week when the paint was dry the students cut out the shapes and added the wood sticks.

Garden Gnomes

These are the last of the recycled cones I had in the classroom.
The 2nd grade made them into really cool gnomes.
Each one has their own personality.
