What a great day we had with author and illustrator Ralph Masiello. Each class got an energetic and educational presentation for an hour in the church hall. Ralph has published many "how to draw" books and visited hundreds of schools. We were lucky to have him here to teach us about what it takes to research and illustrate successful books. Thanks Mr. Masiello!!

ATC
Finally the 3rd grade class got to trade artist cards. We had a tough time getting someone to trade this year, but we lucked out by getting St. Josephs in Holbrook to trade. Each student made two cards to send to St. Joe's then they got to pick a card from the St. Joe's students. It's alway a hit. They then wrote a thank you note stating why they chose the card. I hoping to visit St. Joe's next week to deliver the thank yous and meet the class.
Cupcake Box design
As part of the logo design project in 6th grade the students got to choose to do either a soda can or a cupcake box. Here are some of the finished cupcake boxes.

Silver Figures
The 5th grade class has been working on the always fun project of making figures out of wire, tape and paint. They got creative in the positions they put them in.
Roll a Picasso
The K2 class watched a video of "When Pigasso met Mootisse". It's a play off the relationship between Picasso and Matisse but as a pig and cow. After the funny story the students played a game where you roll a die and the number decides what part of the Picasso style face you draw.
Ketchup Day
It's a annual tradition in the art room to have Ketchup Day the week before the Art Fair. It gives the students an opportunity to finish any work that needs a little more work before it gets hung up.
Chihuly Sculpture
The first grade and a little help from second grade made this sculpture inspired by sculpture Dale Chihuly. He works in glass, but we used recycled water bottles from school. The students cut the bottles and paint with acrylic. I hot glued the bottles (cool colors to warm colors) onto a large tube. It looks great in the hallway.
Art Fair 2015
Here is a quick look at the art fair in case you were unable to make it.
I am very proud of all the students hard work this school year. The hallways looked amazing.

7th Grade eBook
I've been using this app to make my own interactive ebook and found that is was easy to use. I'm not a coder but I would like to make my illustrations into an interactive book. While playing with the app I thought it would be a great thing for the students to try too. Demibooks is very pro school and is eager to get more schools using their product in classrooms.
So this is what I tried. This time around I decided to have the students research in computer class and produce the art for a page each in art class. Then I scanned the art added it to the book using Composer. The topic of the book is "Famous Artist". Each student got an artist and a piece of work by the artist to research.
At the bottom of the worksheet was an example of the layout of the pages. The student got reference pictures to make their own version of the work of art and a portrait of the artist. Last they had to figure out what part of the page will be interactive.
Here Matt did his version of "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee". Then he decided to have some of the men appear in the water when the reader touches the screen. This app is only for the iPad.
The students had to plan ahead and make all the interactive part separately.
Here is the layout for Shea's page.
I hope to get the book available for viewing soon. I'll post the progress. Check back.
Art Fair
Don't forget to save the date.
5/15 Friday
12:00-3:00
Art Fair!!!!!
We have lots of great work on display all over school. The student worked extra hard and would love to show it off to everyone that can make it.
Here is some of the work I've started to get ready to hang up.
Vans Design Contest
The 7th grade class was giving the assignment to design a sneaker that would market well with a 3rd grader. They were giving a blank outline of a slip on Van's sneaker. Then they used markers to add their own design keeping in mind what a 9 or 10yr. old would like. When the 3rd grade class came in later in the day they got to vote on their favorites. I'll announce the winners next week.
Happy Mother's Day
K2 class learned about radial design. We talked about the suns rays and how they direct from the center out and how to draw this type of movement. The sun also helps to grow sunflowers which was a perfect flower to make for Mother's day. The center of the flower where all the seeds come from the students used their fingers to paint with tempera paint. The petals were made with oil pastel.
I hope all the moms out there have a great weekend!

International Festival
This Saturday come out to the Su Escuela International Festival in Hingham.
The Sacred Heart 3rd graders where invited again to contribute to the art show at the event.
There will be lots of other things to do while checking out the cool art like food, music, crafts and animals. More info.
Ice Cream in Values
Getting ready for summer by making five scoop ice creams. The students picked either chocolate or strawberry (brown or pink paint) ice cream. Then with each layer add more and more white to get the light values of the color. It also gave us an opportunity to practice drawing layers.
Last we did a lesson on shading a sphere for the red cherry on top.
Hokusai
The Great Wave by Hokusai
in now on view at the MFA
This is the perfect time to introduce Hokusai to the 4th graders.
The original art is a wood print, but we made our version using watercolor and tempera paint. I hope this will inspire some of the students to go and check out the work of Hokusai this summer.
Lego Printmaking
K2 used legos in a different way this week. Most of them were familiar with building with legos, but none had painted with them. It proved to be fun, but MESSY. The goal was to make a robot of their own using different shaped lego blocks dipped in black paint.
Wire Figures in Progress
I thought it was time for 5th grade to work on something 3D.
Staring with pipe cleaner skeletons the students cover their figure with masking tape until it looks bulked up enough. Next they will be painting. I'll post the final product.
Foil Snake
Thanks Billy for the cool cobra.
You can use almost anything to make art, just look around and use your imagination.
