When the first grade made the drip painting of the snake they also added some bright red to some doilies. They were used the following week as hearts, but not just any heart. First we talked and watched a video about how to draw different emotions. The student then picked an emotion to draw on the heart. After that they had to draw a body to match the emotion. I think we have some future cartoonist.

Cherry Blossoms
The sixth grade class have started the cherry blossom paintings. The first step is to cover the paper completly with watercolor paint. Then when it's still wet they sprinkle salt and dry rice all over. After it drys it will leave an interesting texture to use as the background. I'll post the progress.
Finished Year of the Snake
Nice job by the first grade class. After drip painting the "snake skin" and it dried it made an impressive snake that is on display in the hallway outside the art room.

Year of the Snake project
I got a package with this funky shipping padding made of paper (very green). It really looks and feels like snake skin! So I have the talented 1st grade class working on a huge snake for Chinese New Year. First we spread out the paper and the students used eye droppers and watercolor to add a vibrate color to the snake skin. It's drying now. I'll post the progress.
Heart Collage
K2 got ready for Valentines Day with these magazine collages. We talked about different tones of red you can find in a magazine to make art.
Swans
On display in the art room right now are these lovely pencil drawings by the 6th grade class. The lesson focused on drawing from shapes, shading and textures.
Catholic School Week
In celebration of Catholic School Week the 3rd and 4th grade class worked on their writing skills, painting skills and drawing skills with this picture of sheep.
Snowmen in different views
The 3rd grade class got a lesson on how it's good to see things from different views. A simple snowman can be interesting if view from a different angle. Oil pastels were the medium used.
Color Mixing and Abstract Landscapes
The 7th grade class started with only the primary colors (R,Y,B) in watercolor paint. Next they mixed them to make the secondary and tertiary colors as you can see from the color wheel above. With these mixed colors they painted bands on watercolor paper and tore them to appear as mountains. When overlapped they look like a colorful landscape. What I want to show is that all you need is primary colors and you can make enough colors to paint a landscape.
Art Club
Art Club had started again. We just finished up the "drawing animals" session. We worked on many different animals both realistic and cartoon style. Here is a great link to a site with step by step instructions for you draw at home.
Next session will be painting skills.
ATC (artist trading cards)
This year the 4th grade class made mini works of art the size of baseball cards to trade with the Murphy school in Weymouth. Here is our book before it went off to the other school. It's nice to work with other schools in the town. Thanks to Mrs. McCarthy the art teacher at Murphy!
