Vans Design Contest

The 7th grade class was giving the assignment to design a sneaker that would market well with a 3rd grader. They were giving a blank outline of a slip on Van's sneaker. Then they used markers to add their own design keeping in mind what a 9 or 10yr. old would like. When the 3rd grade class came in later in the day they got to vote on their favorites. I'll announce the winners next week.

Happy Mother's Day

K2 class learned about radial design. We talked about the suns rays and how they direct from the center out and how to draw this type of movement. The sun also helps to grow sunflowers which was a perfect flower to make for Mother's day. The center of the flower where all the seeds come from the students used their fingers to paint with tempera paint. The petals were made with oil pastel.

International Festival

This Saturday come out to the Su Escuela International Festival in Hingham.

The Sacred Heart 3rd graders where invited again to contribute to the art show at the event.

There will be lots of other things to do while checking out the cool art like food, music, crafts and animals.  More info.

Ice Cream in Values

Getting ready for summer by making five scoop ice creams. The students picked either chocolate or strawberry (brown or pink paint) ice cream. Then with each layer add more and more white to get the light values of the color. It also gave us an opportunity to practice drawing layers.

Last we did a lesson on shading a sphere for the red cherry on top.

Hokusai

This is the perfect time to introduce Hokusai to the 4th graders.

The original art is a wood print, but we made our version using watercolor and tempera paint. I hope this will inspire some of the students to go and check out the work of Hokusai this summer.

Lego Printmaking

K2 used legos in a different way this week. Most of them were familiar with building with legos, but none had painted with them. It proved to be fun, but MESSY. The goal was to make a robot of their own using different shaped lego blocks dipped in black paint. 

Wire Figures in Progress

I thought it was time for 5th grade to work on something 3D. 

Staring with pipe cleaner skeletons the students cover their figure with masking tape until it looks bulked up enough. Next they will be painting. I'll post the final product.
