Clay with K2

The K2 class and I watched an old Gumby show then talked about how the figures were made from clay and animated by stop motion. It just makes you want to play with clay so we got some out.

 



Artwork from the CAFETERIA!!!!

Have you every had those little cheese circles packaged in red wax. Once of my crafty students found if you hold the wax in your hand long enough it becomes soft and able to shape into forms. Look at the cool bird he made at lunch. Nice job William!

I just want to take this time to say thanks to everyone that keeps an eye on this blog. I really enjoy teaching the students at Sacred Heart and feel the need to share all the hard work they are doing. I keep most of the artwork in the class room till the Art Fair, so it's tough for the parents to know what their children have been creating.
I'm happy to say that this blog has a lot of views considering we are such a small school. It goes to show you that we have some proud parents and care givers.
I case you want to know when is the best time to check updates I tend to make them on Friday. Sorry if I miss a day or two, but it's regularly every week when we have school.

Design Your Own Rocket Ship

I found out about a fun contest with not much time to beat the deadline. The 3rd and 4th grade worked swiftly to make their own design for a space ship.

The sponsor of the contest is the Space Foundation.



Watercolor Resist Letters

 

K2 used masking tape to make the first letter of their name on paper. Then they added designs with crayons. They now have two kinds of resist for the watercolor paint. After drying for a day this is what's left behind. How 'bot the tape skills. Some students had to make an "S"!!! And they did.



Lego Minifigure Self Portrait

 

These were done by the 1st grade after we watch a video about artist that

make large scale sculptures out of Legos.

Scratchboard

 

Scratchboard is thick paper that has a layer of black ink printed on top.

The artist uses a metal tipped tool to scratch away the black ink leaving the white to show.

It's drawing in reverse. It's tougher though. It takes skill to get it to scrape the way you want.

Each of the 5th and 6th grade class started by drawing with pencil lightly an ear of corn. Then after finishing the scratching they added color with sharpies. 



Tepees and Canoes

 

The board outside the art room is all ready for Thanksgiving with Native American art by K2 and 1st grade. The K2 decorated their own tepee with unique lines that I drew on the chalkboard for them. The materials used were oil pastels.

 

The canoes were constructed by 1st grade with paper towel tubes and painted to look like birch tree bark. If you look close you can see the happy passengers.

3-D Abstract Sculpture

 

Did you know that we have a class of abstract artist in 1st grade.

This is a great example by Julian.

The fun thing about these sculptures are that they can be changed anytime you want to.

Work from Home

 

Thanks to Jack in 1st grade for bringing in this collection of art he did at home. Drawing flags are tough! He handled it quite well. The stars take some skill. Nice job!

I especially love the Christmas Spidey.

 



Texture Quilts

Ok, yes this the third year of doing this project. But it's such a great lesson I have to see how each K2 class does with it. As you can see this year was very successful. Each table got a variety of textures (sandpaper, texture wallpaper, Legos, floor tiles, etc..). Then after drawing the quilt squares they made each square a different pattern by rubbing crayons over the texture.

Lucha Libre Mask

The 8th graders had to come up with their own Lucha Libre character and design the mask with coordinating outfit. They also had to flex their Spanish skills with naming the character. Each student picked two colors to work with and used a template for the mask shape. The markings on the mask needed to represent the personality of the wrestler. Some are good, some are evil and some are part animal.

The 5th and 6th grade class used blue construction paper to cut shapes to

create negative and positive designs.
