Tufts Library Butterfly Collection

This is our second year having the 5th grade class walk over to Tufts Library and have a little nature drawing time. I really want to thank the library for letting us take out the valuable collection to see up close. All 5000 !!! The students did a great job drawing a variety of species and then looking up the name and country of origin.

The Scream by Munch

Koi Fish

The 2nd grade class followed along as I did this drawing lesson on the board. The koi fish are drawn in the perspective from above. The first steps were drawn with crayons, then the orange and blue where added with watercolor paint.

Collage Fun Portraits

The 5th grade and 4th grade classes had the assignment of thinking abstractly and create two portraits. One human, one animal using collage magazines.

Monarch Butterflies

I did this project last year and it was a big hit.
I think the 1st grade enjoyed it just as much this year. The lesson focused on symmetry and the color and markings of our Monarch butterfly. The art was done with oil pastels.

Gnomes and Mushrooms

With gardens starting to bloom the 3rd graders made garden gnomes and mushrooms using recycled materials. The gnomes were thread spools at one time and the buckles are recycled too. Both from Extras in Lynn. The base of the mushroom was donated last year from Mrs. Fowkes in 5th grade. The top of the mushroom is a paper bowl.

Work from Home

Thanks to David in 3rd grade for sharing the cool sculpture you made at home. It takes patients and skill to transform a 2d image to 3d. Well done!

Thanks to George Kiriaki in 2nd grade for bringing in this cool dragon he painted.

Clay birds

Here is the 3rd grade class with the Glazy Days projects done. They added their own ribbons and pipe cleaners at the end for feet and tails. Thanks Mrs. D for all the hard work, the students really enjoy working with the clay and seeing the finished product after it's been fired.

Clay fish done

The 7th grade class finished up the clay fish with Glazy Days this week. The top fish are before pictures of what they were like before adding glass beads and rocks.

Dragon heads

The 1st grade and 2nd grade classes followed along with me in drawing these dragon heads. After tracing with black marker they personalized them with oil pastels. Look for these to be on display at the Tufts art show next week.

Clay flower dishes being painted

Check back later and I'll post what the finished glazed dishes look like.
Looks good 5th grade!

Origami blinking eye

The 6th grade students that got their clay projects done early got to try their hand at some origami. This one is great because you can actually make the lids open and close. The students also got a quick lesson on how to color the iris to look realistic. Here is where you can go to try it or other simple origami.

Art Show at Tufts Libary

Here's a quick view of the show we had if you missed it. The artwork was pieces influenced by graffiti and street art. Most of the work was done by students at home on their own time.

The next show will be the week of May 6 and the theme is dragons.
