Primary Fish

1st and 2nd grade students learned about primary and secondary colors. With only yellow, red and blue paint they mixed to make green and orange to finish the fish scene. These are some happy fish!

Color mixing tissue - K2

What happens when you mix red and blue?
K2 played with colored tissue paper and saw that when you put red on top of blue you get purple.
Next they worked on their tracing skills by tracing a large leaf shape on the tissue. We then discussed the veins of the leaf and how in brings the water to the leaf. After adding the veins they cut their leaves so I could add them to the special "closet" tree in the room.

Pop Art Sneakers

The 7th and 8th graders have been working hard on this project and it has payed off. They were asked to take one of their sneakers and do a contour drawing. It takes a lot of control to draw without taking the pen off the paper. Then the next step was to look at the sneaker for shapes and patterns to use for the background. This is something used often in advertising. To top it off the background is only to be painted in tones of grey. Project well done!

Art room in September

When the school year starts the room is like a blank canvas.
Check back in May to see it bursting with color.

Here we go. A start to a new school year, a new teacher (me) and a new art class. It's all very exciting. I hope to bring a good mix of project to all grades. I'm sure I will be learning a lot myself.

The first week was short, but we were able to get in a few lessons.

The 7th and 8th graders jumped right in with some Circle Painting
(circlepainting.com) and made some cooperative artwork.

The 3rd graders worked in teams to do the "Pass the Painting" lesson.
First the class discussed the parts of a cat. All the parts were listed. Then each student gets a color paint to work with. Student one starts with the head then passes the painting to student two, the ears are added, ect. When completed we have a crazy mixed up cat. I like they way they came out.
